And when it is said to them: "Fear of that which is before you (worldly torments), and that which is behind you (torments in the Hereafter), in order that you may receive Mercy (i.e. if you believe in Allâh’s religion - Islâmic Monotheism, and avoid polytheism, and obey Allâh with righteous deeds)."

and so [sudden will be their end that] no testament will they be able to make, nor to their own people will they return!

اور جب ان سے کہا جاتا ہے کہ جو تمہارے آگے اور جو تمہارے پیچھے ہے اس سے ڈرو تاکہ تم پر رحم کیا جائے

{ وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ اتَّقُوا مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَمَا خَلْفَكُمْ } أي: من أحوال البرزخ والقيامة، وما في الدنيا من العقوبات { لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ } أعرضوا عن ذلك، فلم يرفعوا به رأسا، ولو جاءتهم كل آية.

وإذا قيل للمشركين: احذروا أمر الآخرة وأهوالها وأحوال الدنيا وعقابها؛ رجاء رحمة الله لكم، أعرضوا، ولم يجيبوا إلى ذلك.

يقول تعالى مخبرا عن تمادي المشركين فى غيهم وضلالهم وعدم اكتراثهم بذنوبهم التي أسلفوها وما يستقبلون بين أيديهم يوم القيامة "وإذا قيل لهم اتقوا ما بين أيديكم وما خلفكم" قال مجاهد من الذنوب وقال غيره بالعكس "لعلكم ترحمون" أي لعل الله باتقائكم ذلك يرحمكم ويؤمنكم من عذابه وتقدير الكلام أنهم لا يجيبون إلى ذلك بل يعرضون عنه.

The Misguidance of the Idolators Allah tells us how the idolators persisted in their misguidance and in not paying attention to the sins that they had committed in the past or what was to happen to them in the future, on the Day of Resurrection. وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ اتَّقُواْ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَمَا خَلْفَكُمْ (And when it is said to them: "Fear of that which is before you, and that which is behind you...") Mujahid said, "This refers to sins." Others said it is the opposite. لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ (in order that you may receive mercy.) means, `so that, if you fear such things Allah will have mercy on you and will save you from His punishment.' The wording implies that they would not respond. Rather that they would turn away and ignore that, as Allah says: وَمَا تَأْتِيهِم مِّنْ ءَايَةٍ مِّنْ ءَايَـتِ رَبِّهِمْ (And never came an Ayah from among the Ayat of their Lord to them,) meaning, signs of Tawhid and the truth of the Messengers, إِلاَّ كَانُواْ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ (but they did turn away from it,) means, they did not accept it or benefit from it. وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ أَنفِقُواْ مِمَّا رِزَقَكُمُ الله (And when it is said to them: "Spend of that with which Allah has provided you,") means, when they are told to spend of that which Allah has provided to them on the poor and needy among the Muslims, قَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ (those who disbelieve say to those who believe) means, about the believers who are poor, i.e., they say to those believers who tell them to spend on the needy, أَنُطْعِمُ مَن لَّوْ يَشَآءُ اللَّهُ أَطْعَمَهُ (Shall we feed those whom, if Allah willed, He (Himself) would have fed) meaning, `those whom you are telling us to spend on, if Allah had wanted to, He would have made them independent and fed them from His provision, so we are in accordance with the will of Allah with regard to them. إِنْ أَنتُمْ إِلاَّ فِى ضَلَـلٍ مُّبِينٍ (You are only in a plain error.) means, `by telling us to do that.'

کفار کا تکبر۔کافروں کی سرکشی نادانی اور عناد تکبر بیان ہو رہا ہے کہ جب ان سے گناہوں سے بچنے کو کہا جاتا ہے کہ جو کرچکے ان پر نادم ہوجاؤ ان سے توبہ کرلو اور آئندہ کے لئے ان سے احتیاط کرو۔ اس سے اللہ تم پر رحم فرمائے گا اور تمہیں اپنے عذابوں سے بچا لے گا۔ تو وہ اس پر کار بند ہوا تو ایک طرف اور منہ پھلا لیتے ہیں، قرآن نے اس جملے کو بیان نہیں فرمایا کیونکہ آگے جو آیت ہے وہ اس پر صاف طور سے دلالت کرتی ہے۔ اس میں ہے کہ یہی ایک بات کیا ؟ ان کی تو عادت ہوگئی ہے کہ اللہ کی ہر بات سے منہ پھیر لیں۔ نہ اسکی توحید کو مانتے ہیں نہ رسولوں کو سچا جانتے ہیں نہ ان میں غور و خوض کی عادت نہ ان میں قبولیت کا مادہ، نہ نفع کو حاصل کرنے کا ملکہ۔ ان کو جب کبھی اللہ کی راہ میں خیرات کرنے کو کہا جاتا ہے کہ اللہ نے جو تمہیں دیا ہے اس میں فقراء مساکین اور محتاجوں کا حصہ بھی ہے۔ تو یہ جواب دیتے ہیں کہ اگر اللہ کا ارادہ ہوتا تو ان غریبوں کو خود ہی دیتا، جب اللہ ہی کا ارادہ انہیں دینے کا نہیں تو ہم اللہ کے ارادے کے خلاف کیوں کریں ؟ تم جو ہمیں خیرات کی نصیحت کر رہے ہو اس میں بالکل غلطی پر ہو۔ یہ بھی ہوسکتا ہے کہ یہ پچھلہ جملہ کفار کی تردید میں اللہ کی طرف سے ہو۔ یعنی اللہ تعالیٰ ان کفار سے فرما رہا ہے کہ تم کھلی گمراہی میں ہو لیکن ان سے یہی اچھا معلوم ہوتا ہے کہ یہ بھی کفار کے جواب کا حصہ ہے۔ واللہ اعلم۔
