Why learn Arabic & tajweed? (Hadith)
خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ
“The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.”
What this means for you
Learning Arabic and tajweed is not extra — it is among the best deeds you can do.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5027 · Sahih Muslim 793
يُقَالُ لِصَاحِبِ الْقُرْآنِ: اقْرَأْ وَارْتَقِ وَرَتِّلْ كَمَا كُنْتَ تُرَتِّلُ فِي الدُّنْيَا
“It will be said to the companion of the Quran: Recite and rise in rank, recite slowly and beautifully as you used to in the world.”
What this means for you
How you recite in this life matters. Tajweed helps you recite the way the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions did.
Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2914 · graded Hasan by al-Albani
الَّذِي يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ وَهُوَ مَاهِرٌ بِهِ مَعَ السَّفَرَةِ الْكِرَامِ الْبَرَرَةِ
“The one who recites the Quran proficiently will be with the noble, obedient angels.”
What this means for you
“Proficient” (mahir) means reciting correctly with tajweed — not rushing or guessing letters.
Sahih al-Bukhari 4937 · Sahih Muslim 798
تَعَلَّمُوا الْعَرَبِيَّةَ فَإِنَّهَا مِنْ دِينِكُمْ
“Learn Arabic, for it is part of your religion.”
What this means for you
You do not need to become a scholar overnight. Start with letters, then short surahs, then build.
Reported from Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) · Ibn Abi Shaybah
5 steps for beginners
- 1
Learn the 28 letters first
Do: Use the Alphabet tab. Tap each letter. Say its sound out loud.
The companions learned letters before full surahs. You cannot read Quran without knowing letters.
- 2
Start with beginner tajweed only
Do: Press “Start Beginner Path”. Learn rules 1–10 before advanced madd or sifaat.
Ibn Uthaymeen taught: build foundation first. Most daily recitation mistakes come from noon/meem rules and madd.
- 3
Practice on short surahs
Do: Apply one rule on Al-Fatiha or Al-Ikhlas. Mark it “learned” when you can explain it simply.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said recite what you find easy. Short surahs with tajweed beat long surahs with errors.
- 4
Learn roots to feel the Quran
Do: Pick 3 roots (e.g. ر-ح-م, ع-ل-م, س-ل-م). Read their verses on Quran Study.
Salaf scholars taught Arabic so Muslims understand worship, not just sound words.
- 5
Find a teacher when you can
Do: Recite to someone who knows tajweed — even once a week online or locally.
Tajweed was always taught mouth-to-ear. A teacher catches mistakes you cannot hear yourself.
