That was because there came to them their Messengers with clear proofs (signs), but they said: "Shall mere men guide us?" So they disbelieved and turned away (from the truth). But Allâh was not in need (of them). And Allâh is Rich (Free of all needs), Worthy of all praise.

this, because time and again there came unto them their apostles with all evidence of the truth, but they [always] replied, Shall mere mortal men be our guides? And so they denied the truth and turned away.

یہ اس لئے کہ ان کے پاس پیغمبر کھلی نشانیاں لے کر آئے تو یہ کہتے کہ کیا آدمی ہمارے ہادی بنتے ہیں؟ تو انہوں نے (ان کو) نہ مانا اور منہ پھیر لیا اور خدا نے بھی بےپروائی کی۔ اور خدا بےپروا (اور) سزاوار حمد (وثنا) ہے

ذكر السبب في هذه العقوبة فقال: { ذَلِكَ } النكال والوبال، الذي أحللناه بهم { بِأَنَّهُ كَانَتْ تَأْتِيهِمْ رُسُلُهُمْ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ } أي: بالآيات الواضحات، الدالة على الحق والباطل، فاشمأزوا، واستكبروا على رسلهم، { فقالوا أَبَشَرٌ يَهْدُونَنَا } أي: فليس لهم فضل علينا، ولأي: شيء خصهم الله دوننا، كما قال في الآية الأخرى: { قَالَتْ لَهُمْ رُسُلُهُمْ إِنْ نَحْنُ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَمُنُّ عَلَى مَنْ يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ } فهم حجروا فضل الله ومنته على أنبيائه أن يكونوا رسلاً للخلق، واستكبروا عن الانقياد لهم، فابتلوا بعبادة الأحجار والأشجار ونحوها { فَكَفَرُوا } بالله { وَتَوَلَّوْا } عن طاعه الله، { وَاسْتَغْنَى اللَّهُ } عنهم، فلا يبالي بهم، ولا يضره ضلالهم شيئًا، { وَاللَّهُ غَنِيٌّ حَمِيدٌ } أي: هو الغني، الذي له الغنى التام المطلق، من جميع الوجوه، الحميد في أقواله وأفعاله وأوصافه.

ذلك الذي أصابهم في الدنيا، وما يصيبهم في الآخرة؛ بسبب أنهم كانت تأتيهم رسل الله بالآيات البينات والمعجزات الواضحات، فقالوا منكرين: أبشر مثلنا يرشدوننا؟ فكفروا بالله وجحدوا رسالة رسله، وأعرضوا عن الحق فلم يقبلوه. واستغنى الله، والله غني، له الغنى التام المطلق، حميد في أقواله وأفعاله وصفاته لا يبالي بهم، ولا يضره ضلالهم شيئًا.

ثم علل ذلك فقال "ذلك بأنه كانت تأتيهم رسلهم بالبينات" أي بالحجج والدلائل والبراهين "فقالوا أبشر يهدوننا" أي استبعدوا أن تكون الرسالة في البشر وأن يكون هداهم على يدي بشر مثلهم "فكفروا وتولوا" أي كذبوا بالحق ونكلوا عن العمل "واستغنى الله" أي عنهم "والله غني حميد".

A Warning delivered through mentioning the End of the Disbelieving Nations Informing about the past nations and the torment and disciplinary lessons that they suffered because of opposing the Messengers and denying the truth. Allah says; أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ نَبَؤُاْ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِن قَبْلُ (Has not the news reached you of those who disbelieved aforetime) meaning, information about them and what happened to them, فَذَاقُواْ وَبَالَ أَمْرِهِمْ (And so they tasted the evil result of their disbelief.) They tasted the evil consequences of their denial and sinful actions. And it refers to the punishment and humiliation they received in the life of the world, وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ (and theirs will be a painful torment.) in the Hereafter, added to the torment they received in this life. Allah explained why; ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُ كَانَت تَّأْتِيهِمْ رُسُلُهُم بِالْبَيِّنَـتِ (That was because there came to them their Messengers with Bayyinat,) supporting arguments, evidence, and clear proofs, فَقَالُواْ أَبَشَرٌ يَهْدُونَنَا (but they said:"Shall mere men guide us") They discounted and dismissed the possibility that the Message would be sent to a human and that their guidance would come by the hands of a man like themselves, فَكَفَرُواْ وَتَوَلَّواْ (So they disbelieved and turned away.) they denied the truth and turned away from abiding by it, وَّاسْتَغْنَى اللَّهُ (But Allah was not in need.) of them, وَاللَّهُ غَنِىٌّ حَمِيدٌ (And Allah is not need, Worthy of all praise.)

سابقہ واقعات سے سبق لو یہاں گزشتہ کافروں کے کفر اور ان کی بری سزا اور بدترین بدلے کا ذکر ہو رہا ہے کہ کیا تمہیں تم سے پہلے منکروں کا حال معلوم نہیں ؟ کہ رسولوں کی مخالفت اور حق کی تکذیب کیا رنگ لائی ؟ دنیا اور آخرت میں برباد ہوگئے یہاں بھی اپنے بد افعال کا خمیازہ بھگتا اور وہاں کا بھگتنا ابھی باقی ہے جو نہایت الم انگیز ہے۔ اس کی وجہ سوا اس کے کچھ بھی نہیں کہ دلائل وبراہین اور روشن نشان کے ساتھ جو انبیاء اللہ ان کے پاس آئے انہوں نے انہیں نہ مانا اور اپنے نزدیک اسے محال جانا کہ انسان پیغمبر ہو، اور انہی جیسے ایک آدم زاد کے ہاتھ پر انہیں ہدایت دی جائے پس انکار کر بیٹھے اور عمل چھوڑ دیا، اللہ تعالیٰ نے بھی ان سے بےپرواہی برتی وہ تو غنی ہے ہی اور ساتھ ہی حمد وثناء کے لائق بھی۔
