Say: "Who is he who can protect you from Allâh if He intends to harm you, or intends mercy on you?" And they will not find, besides Allâh, for themselves any Walî (protector, supporter) or any helper.

begrudging you all help. But then, when danger threatens, thou canst see them looking to thee [for help, O Prophet], their eyes rolling [in terror] like [the eyes of] one who is overshadowed by death: yet as soon as the danger has passed, they will assail you [believers] with sharp tongues, begrudging you all that is good!

کہہ دو کہ اگر خدا تمہارے ساتھ برائی کا ارادہ کرے تو کون تم کو اس سے بچا سکتا ہے یا اگر تم پر مہربانی کرنی چاہے تو (کون اس کو ہٹا سکتا ہے) اور یہ لوگ خدا کے سوا کسی کو نہ اپنا دوست پائیں گے اور نہ مددگار

ثم بين أن الأسباب كلها لا تغني عن العبد شيئًا إذا أراده اللّه بسوء، فقال: { قُلْ مَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَعْصِمُكُمْ } أي: يمنعكم { من اللَّهِ إِنْ أَرَادَ بِكُمْ سُوءًا } أي: شرًا، { أَوْ أَرَادَ بِكُمْ رَحْمَةً } فإنه هو المعطي المانع، الضار النافع، الذي لا يأتي بالخير إلا هو، ولا يدفع السوء إلا هو.{ وَلَا يَجِدُونَ لَهُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ وَلِيًّا } يتولاهم، فيجلب لهم النفع { وَلَا نَصِيرًا } أي ينصرهم، فيدفع عنهم المضار.فَلْيَمْتَثِلُوا طاعة المنفرد بالأمور كلها، الذي نفذت مشيئته، ومضى قدره، ولم ينفع مع ترك ولايته ونصرته، وَلِيٌّ ولا ناصر.

قل -أيها النبي- لهم: مَن ذا الذي يمنعكم من الله، أو يجيركم مِن عذابه، إن أراد بكم سوءًا، أو أراد بكم رحمة، فإنه المعطي المانع الضارُّ النافع؟ ولا يجد هؤلاء المنافقون لهم من دون الله وليًّا يواليهم، ولا نصيرًا ينصرهم.

ثم قال تعالى "قل من ذا الذي يعصمكم من الله" أي يمنعكم "إن أراد بكم سوءا أو أراد بكم رحمة ولا يجدون لهم من دون الله وليا ولا نصيرا" أي ليس لهم ولا لغيرهم من الله مجير ولا مغيث.

يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ بُيُوتَنَا عَوْرَةٌ وَمَا هِىَ بِعَوْرَةٍ إِن يُرِيدُونَ إِلاَّ فِرَاراً ("Truly, our homes lie open." And they lay not open. They but wished to flee.) If the enemy had entered upon them from every side of Al-Madinah and from every direction, then demanded that they become disbelievers, they would have promptly done so. They would not have adhered to their faith or remained steadfast in it if they were faced with the slightest fear. This is how it was interpreted by Qatadah, `Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd and Ibn Jarir. This is a condemnation of them in the clearest terms. Then Allah reminds them of the promise they had made to Him before this fear struck them, that they would not turn their backs or flee from the battlefield. وَكَانَ عَهْدُ اللَّهِ مَسْئُولاً (and a covenant with Allah must be answered for.) means, Allah will inevitably ask them about that covenant. Then Allah tells them that fleeing from battle will not delay their appointed demise or make their lives any longer; on the contrary, it may be the cause of their being taken sooner, and in a sudden manner. Allah says: وَإِذاً لاَّ تُمَتَّعُونَ إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً (and then you will enjoy no more than a little while!) meaning, `after you run away and flee from battle.' قُلْ مَتَـعُ الدُّنْيَا قَلِيلٌ وَالاٌّخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لِّمَنِ اتَّقَى (Say: "Short is the enjoyment of this world. The Hereafter is better for him who have Taqwa") (4:77). Then Allah says: قُلْ مَن ذَا الَّذِى يَعْصِمُكُمْ مِّنَ اللَّهِ إِنْ أَرَادَ بِكُمْ سُوءاً أَوْ أَرَادَ بِكُمْ رَحْمَةً وَلاَ يَجِدُونَ لَهُمْ مِّن دُونِ اللَّهِ وَلِيّاً وَلاَ نَصِيراً (Say: "Who is he who can protect you from Allah if He intends to harm you, or intends mercy on you" And they will not find, besides Allah, for themselves any protector or any helper.) meaning, they have no one else except Allah to respond to their cries.

جہاد سے پیٹھ پھیرنے والوں سے باز پرس ہوگی جو لوگ یہ عذر کرکے جہاد سے بھاگ رہے تھے کہ ہمارے گھر اکیلے پڑے ہیں جن کا بیان اوپر گذرا۔ ان کی نسبت جناب باری فرماتا ہے کہ اگر ان پر دشمن مدینے کے چو طرف سے اور ہر ہر رخ سے آجائے پھر ان سے کفر میں داخل ہونے کا سوال کیا جائے تو یہ بےتامل کفر کو قبول کرلیں گے لیکن تھوڑے خوف اور خیالی دہشت کی بنا پر ایمان سے دست برداری کررہے ہیں۔ یہ ان کی مذمت بیان ہوئی ہے۔ پھر فرماتا ہے یہی تو ہیں جو اس سے پہلے لمبی لمبی ڈینگیں مارتے تھے کہ خواہ کچھ ہی کیوں نہ ہوجائے ہم میدان جنگ سے پیٹھ پھیرنے والے نہیں۔ کیا یہ نہیں جانتے کہ یہ جو وعدے انہوں نے اللہ تعالیٰ سے کئے تھے اللہ تعالیٰ ان کی باز پرس کرے گا۔ پھر ارشاد ہوتا ہے کہ یہ موت وفوت سے بھاگنا لڑائی سے منہ چھپانا میدان میں پیٹھ دکھانا جان نہیں بچاسکتا بلکہ بہت ممکن ہے کہ اللہ تعالیٰ کی اچانک پکڑ کے جلد آجانے کا باعث ہوجائے اور دنیا کا تھوڑا سا نفع بھی حاصل نہ ہوسکے۔ حالانکہ دنیا تو آخرت جیسی باقی چیز کے مقابلے پر کل کی کل حقیر اور محض ناچیز ہے۔ پھر فرمایا کہ بجز اللہ کے کوئی نہ دے سکے نہ دلاسکے نہ مددگاری کرسکے نہ حمایت پر آسکے۔ اللہ اپنے ارادوں کو پورا کرکے ہی رہتا ہے۔
