Then they turned to themselves (their first thought and said): "Indeed you [Ibrâhîm (Abraham)] know well that these (idols) speak not!"

Said some [of them]: We heard a youth speak of these [gods with scorn]: he is called Abraham.

پھر (شرمندہ ہو کر) سر نیچا کرلیا (اس پر بھی ابراہیم سے کہنے لگے کہ) تم جانتے ہو یہ بولتے نہیں

ولكن { نُكِسُوا عَلَى رُءُوسِهِمْ ْ} أي: انقلب الأمر عليهم، وانتكست عقولهم وضلت أحلامهم، فقالوا لإبراهيم: { لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا هَؤُلَاءِ يَنْطِقُونَ ْ} فكيف تهكم بنا وتستهزئ بنا وتأمرنا أن نسألها وأنت تعلم أنها لا تنطق؟ .

وسُرعان ما عاد إليهم عنادهم بعد إفحامهم، فانقلبوا إلى الباطل، واحتجُّوا على إبراهيم بما هو حجة له عليهم، فقالوا: كيف نسألها، وقد علمتَ أنها لا تنطق؟

ثم نكسوا على رءوسهم " أي ثم أطرقوا في الأرض فقالوا " لقد علمت ما هؤلاء ينطقون " قال قتادة أدركت القومَ حيرةُ سوءٍ فقالوا " لقد علمت ما هؤلاء ينطقون " وقال السدي " ثم نكسوا على رءوسهم " أي في الفتنة وقال ابن زيد أي في الرأي وقول قتادة أظهر في المعنى لأنهم إنما فعلوا ذلك حيرة وعجزا ولهذا قالوا له " لقد علمت ما هؤلاء ينطقون " فكيف تقول لنا سلوهم إن كانوا ينطقون وأنت تعلم أنها لا تنطق فعندها قال لهم إبراهيم لما اعترفوا بذلك ".

The People's admission of their gods' incapability, and Ibrahim's preaching Allah tells us that when Ibrahim said what he said, his people فَرَجَعُواْ إِلَى أَنفُسِهِمْ (turned to themselves) meaning, they blamed themselves for not taking precautions and protecting their gods. They said: إِنَّكُمْ أَنتُمُ الظَّـلِمُونَ (Verily, you are the wrongdoers) i.e., because you neglected them and did not guard them. ثُمَّ نُكِسُواْ عَلَى رُءُوسِهِمْ (Then they turned to themselves) means, they looked at the ground, and said: لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا هَـؤُلاءِ يَنطِقُونَ (Indeed you (Ibrahim) know well that these speak not!) Qatadah said: "The people admitted their guilt and confusion, and said, لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا هَـؤُلاءِ يَنطِقُونَ ("Indeed you know well that these speak not!") `So how can you tell us to ask them, if they cannot speak and you know that they cannot speak' At this point, when they admitted that, Ibrahim said to them: أَفَتَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ مَا لاَ يَنفَعُكُمْ شَيْئاً وَلاَ يَضُرُّكُمْ (Do you then worship besides Allah, things that can neither profit you nor harm you) meaning, if they can- not speak and they can neither benefit you nor harm you, then why do you worship them instead of Allah أُفٍّ لَّكُمْ وَلِمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ أَفَلاَ تَعْقِلُونَ (Fie upon you, and upon that which you worship besides Allah! Have you then no sense) `Do you not realize the extent of the mis- guidance and extreme disbelief which you are following, which no one could accept but one who is an igno- rant and evil wrong- doer' He defeated them in argument and left them with no way out. Allah said: وَتِلْكَ حُجَّتُنَآ ءَاتَيْنَـهَآ إِبْرَهِيمَ عَلَى قَوْمِهِ e(And that was Our proof which We gave Ibrahim against his people) 6:83

اپنی حماقت سے پریشان کافر بیان ہو رہا ہے کہ خلیل اللہ ؑ کی باتیں سن کر انہیں خیال تو پیدا ہوگیا۔ اپنے آپ کو اپنی بیوقوفی پر ملامت کرنے لگے۔ سخت ندامت اٹھائی اور آپس میں کہنے لگے کہ ہم نے بڑی غلطی کی، اپنے معبودوں کے پاس کسی کو حفاظت کیلئے نہ چھوڑا اور چل دئیے۔ پھر غور وفکر کرکے بات بنائی کہ آپ جو کچھ ہم سے کہتے ہیں کہ ان سے ہم پوچھ لیں کہ تمہیں کس نے توڑا ہے تو کیا آپ کو علم نہیں کہ یہ بت بےزبان ہیں ؟ عاجزی حیرت اور انتہائی لاجوابی کی حالت میں انہیں اس بات کا اقرار کرنا پڑا اب حضرت خلیل اللہ ؑ کو خاصا موقعہ مل گیا اور آپ فوراً فرمانے لگے کہ بےزبان بےنفع وضرر چیز کی عبادت کیسی ؟ تم کیوں اس قدر بےسمجھ رہے ہو ؟ تف ہے تم پر اور تمہارے ان جھوٹے خداؤں پر آہ کس قدر ظلم وجہل ہے کہ ایسی چیزوں کی پرستش کی جائے اور اللہ واحد کو چھوڑ دیا جائے ؟ یہی تھی وہ دلیلیں جن کا ذکر پہلے ہوا تھا کہ ہم نے ابراہیم کو دلیلیں سکھا دیں جن سے قوم حقیقت تک پہنچ جائے۔
