Then after that you turned away. Had it not been for the Grace and Mercy of Allâh upon you, indeed you would have been among the losers.

And [remember] when Moses prayed for water for his people and We replied, Strike the rock with thy staff! – whereupon twelve springs gushed forth from it, so that all the people knew whence to drink. [And Moses said:] Eat and drink the sustenance provided by God, and do not act wickedly on earth by spreading corruption.

تو تم اس کے بعد (عہد سے) پھر گئے اور اگر تم پر خدا کا فضل اور اس کی مہربانی نہ ہوتی تو تم خسارے میں پڑے گئے ہوتے

فبعد هذا التأكيد البليغ { تَوَلَّيْتُمْ } وأعرضتم, وكان ذلك موجبا لأن يحل بكم أعظم العقوبات، ولكن { لَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ لَكُنْتُمْ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ }

ثم خالفتم وعصيتم مرة أخرى، بعد أَخْذِ الميثاق ورَفْع الجبل كشأنكم دائمًا. فلولا فَضْلُ الله عليكم ورحمته بالتوبة، والتجاوز عن خطاياكم، لصرتم من الخاسرين في الدنيا والآخرة.

قوله تعالى "ثم توليتم من بعد ذلك فلولا فضل الله عليكم" يقول تعالى ثم بعد هذا الميثاق المؤكد العظيم توليتم عنه وانثنيتم ونقضتموه "فلولا فضل الله عليكم ورحمته" أي بتوبته عليكم وإرساله النبيين والمرسلين إليكم "لكنتم من الخاسرين" بنقضكم ذلك الميثاق في الدنيا والآخرة.

Taking the Covenant from the Jews Allah reminded the Children of Israel of the pledges, covenants and promises that He took from them to believe in Him alone, without a partner, and follow His Messengers. Allah stated that when He took their pledge from them, He raised the mountain above their heads, so that they affirm the pledge that they gave Allah and abide by it with sincerity and seriousness. Hence, Allah's statement, وَإِذ نَتَقْنَا الْجَبَلَ فَوْقَهُمْ كَأَنَّهُ ظُلَّةٌ وَظَنُّواْ أَنَّهُ وَاقِعٌ بِهِمْ خُذُواْ مَآ ءَاتَيْنَاكُم بِقُوَّةٍ وَاذْكُرُواْ مَا فِيهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ (And (remember) when We raised the mountain over them as if it had been a canopy, and they thought that it was going to fall on them. (We said): "Hold firmly to what We have given you (Tawrah), and remember that which is therein (act on its commandments), so that you may fear Allah and obey Him.") (7:171). The mount mentioned here is At-Tur, just as it was explained in Surat Al-A`raf, according to the Tafsir of Ibn `Abbas, Mujahid, `Ata', `Ikrimah, Al-Hasan, Ad-Dahhak, Ar-Rabi` bin Anas and others. This is more obvious. There is another report from Ibn `Abbas saying; `The Tur is a type of mountain that vegetation grows on, if no vegetation grows on it, it is not called Tur.' And in the Hadith about the trials, Ibn `Abbas said; "When they (the Jews) refused to obey, Allah raised the mountain above their heads so that they would listen." Al-Hasan said that Allah's statement, خُذُواْ مَآ ءَاتَيْنَـكُم بِقُوَّةٍ (Hold fast to that which We have given you) means, the Tawrah. Mujahid said that the Ayah commanded, "Strictly adhere to it." Abu Al-`Aliyah and Ar-Rabi` said that, وَاذْكُرُواْ مَا فِيهِ (and remember that which is therein) means, "Read the Tawrah and implement it." Allah's statement, ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُم مِّن بَعْدِ ذلِكَ فَلَوْلاَ فَضْلُ اللَّهِ (Then after that you turned away. Had it not been for the grace of Allah) means, "Yet, after the firm pledge that you gave, you still deviated and broke your pledge"; فَلَوْلاَ فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ (Had it not been for the grace and mercy of Allah upon you), meaning, by forgiving you and by sending the Prophets and Messengers to you, لَكُنتُم مِّنَ الْخَـسِرِينَ (Indeed you would have been among the losers) meaning, in this life and the Hereafter due to their breach of the covenant.

عہد شکن یہود ان آیتوں میں اللہ تعالیٰ بنی اسرائیل کو ان کے عہد و پیمان یاد دلا رہا ہے کہ میری عبادت اور میرے نبی کی اطاعت کا وعدہ میں تم سے لے چکا ہوں اور اس وعدے کو پورا کرانے اور منوانے کے لئے میں نے طور پہاڑ کو تمہارے سروں پر لا کر کھڑا کردیا تھا جیسے اور جگہ ہے آیت (وَاِذْ نَتَقْنَا الْجَبَلَ فَوْقَهُمْ كَاَنَّهٗ ظُلَّـةٌ وَّظَنُّوْٓا اَنَّهٗ وَاقِعٌۢ بِهِمْ) 7۔ الاعراف :171) جب ہم نے ان کے سروں پر سائبان کی طرح پہاڑ لا کر کھڑا کیا اور وہ یقین کرچکے کہ اب پہاڑ ان پر گر کر انہیں کچل ڈالے گا اس وقت ہم نے کہا ہماری دی ہوئی چیز کو مضبوط تھامو اور اس میں جو کچھ ہے اسے یاد کرو تو بچ جاؤ گے " طور " سے مراد پہاڑ ہے جیسے سورة اعراف کی آیت میں ہے اور جیسے صحابہ اور تابعین نے اس کی تفسیر کی ہے ثابت یہی ہے کہ طور اس پہاڑ کو کہتے ہیں جس پر سبزہ اگتا ہو۔ حدیث فتون میں بروایت ابن عباس مروی ہے کہ جب انہوں نے اطاعت سے انکار کرنے کے باعث ان کے سر پر پہاڑ آگیا لیکن اسی وقت یہ سب سجدے میں گرپڑے اور مارے ڈر کے کنکھیوں سے اوپر کی طرف دیکھتے رہے اللہ تعالیٰ نے ان پر رحم فرمایا اور پہاڑ ہٹا لیا اسی وجہ سے وہ اسی سجدے کو پسند کرتے ہیں کہ آدھا دھڑ سجدے میں ہو اور دوسری طرف سے اونچے دیکھ رہے ہوں۔ جو ہم نے دیا اس سے مراد توراۃ ہے قوت سے مراد طاعت ہے یعنی توراۃ پر مضبوطی سے جم کر عمل کرنے کا وعدہ کرو ورنہ پہاڑ تم پر گرا دیا جائے گا اور اس میں جو ہے اسے یاد کرو اور اس پر عمل کرو یعنی توراۃ پڑھتے پڑھاتے رہو۔ لیکن ان لوگوں نے اتنے پختہ میثاق اتنے اعلیٰ عہد اور اس قدر زبردست وعدے کے بعد بھی کچھ پرواہ نہ کی۔ اور عہد شکنی کی اب اگر اللہ تعالیٰ کی کرم فرمائی اور رحمت نہ ہوتی اگر وہ توبہ قبول نہ فرماتا اور نبیوں کے سلسلہ کو برابر جاری نہ رکھتا تو یقینا تمہیں زبردست نقصان پہنچتا اس وعدے کو توڑنے کی بنا پر دنیا اور آخرت میں تم برباد ہوجاتے۔
