[Yûsuf (Joseph)] said: "Set me over the store-houses of the land; I will indeed guard them with full knowledge" (as a minister of finance in Egypt).

And when he had spoken with him, [the King] said: Behold, [from] this day thou shalt be of high standing with us, invested with all trust!

(یوسف نے) کہا مجھے اس ملک کے خزانوں پر مقرر کر دیجیئے کیونکہ میں حفاظت بھی کرسکتا ہوں اور اس کام سے واقف ہوں

{ قَالَ } يوسف طلبا للمصلحة العامة: { اجْعَلْنِي عَلَى خَزَائِنِ الْأَرْضِ } أي: على خزائن جبايات الأرض وغلالها، وكيلا حافظا مدبرا. { إِنِّي حَفِيظٌ عَلِيمٌ } أي: حفيظ للذي أتولاه، فلا يضيع منه شيء في غير محله، وضابط للداخل والخارج، عليم بكيفية التدبير والإعطاء والمنع، والتصرف في جميع أنواع التصرفات، وليس ذلك حرصا من يوسف على الولاية، وإنما هو رغبة منه في النفع العام، وقد عرف من نفسه من الكفاءة والأمانة والحفظ ما لم يكونوا يعرفونه. فلذلك طلب من الملك أن يجعله على خزائن الأرض، فجعله الملك على خزائن الأرض وولاه إياها.

وأراد يوسف أن ينفع العباد، ويقيم العدل بينهم، فقال للملك: اجعلني واليًا على خزائن "مصر"، فإني خازن أمين، ذو علم وبصيرة بما أتولاه.

فقال يوسف عليه السلام " اجعلني على خزائن الأرض إني حفيظ عليم " مدح نفسه ويجوز للرجل ذلك إذا جهل أمر للحاجة وذكر أنه " حفيظ " أي خازن أمين " عليم " ذو علم وبصيرة بما يتولاه وقال شيبة بن نعامة: حفيظ لما استودعتني عليم بسني الجدب رواه ابن أبي حاتم وسأل العمل لعلمه بقدرته عليه ولما فيه من المصالح للناس وإنما سأله أن يجعله على خزائن الأرض وهي الأهرام التي يجمع فيها الغلات لما يستقبلونه من السنين التي أخبرهم بشأنها فيصرف لهم على الوجه الأحوط والأصلح والأرشد فأجيب إلى ذلك رغبة فيه وتكرمة له.

Yusuf's Rank with the King of Egypt Allah states that when he became aware of Yusuf's innocence and his innocense of what he was accused of, the king said, ائْتُونِى بِهِ أَسْتَخْلِصْهُ لِنَفْسِى (Bring him to me that I may attach him to my person.), `that I may make him among my close aids and associates,' فَلَمَّا كَلَّمَهُ (Then, when he spoke to him), when the king spoke to Yusuf and further recognized his virtues, great ability, brilliance, good conduct and perfect mannerism, he said to him, إِنَّكَ الْيَوْمَ لَدَيْنَا مِكِينٌ أَمِينٌ (Verily, this day, you are with us high in rank and fully trusted.) The king said to Yusuf, `You have assumed an exalted status with us and are indeed fully trusted.' Yusuf, peace be upon him said, اجْعَلْنِى عَلَى خَزَآئِنِ الاٌّرْضِ إِنِّى حَفِيظٌ عَلِيمٌ (Set me over the storehouses of the land; I will indeed guard them with full knowledge.) Yusuf praised himself, for this is allowed when one's abilities are unknown and there is a need to do so. He said that he is, حَفِيظٌ (Hafiz), an honest guard, عَلِيمٌ (`Alim), having knowledge and wisdom about the job he is to be entrusted with. Prophet Yusuf asked the king to appoint him as minister of finance for the land, responsible for the harvest storehouses, in which they would collect produce for the years of drought which he told them will come. He wanted to be the guard, so that he could dispense the harvest in the wisest, best and most beneficial way. The king accepted Yusuf's offer, for he was eager to draw Yusuf close to him and to honor him. So Allah said,

جب بادشاہ کے سامنے حضرت یوسف ؑ کی بےگناہی کھل گئی تو خوش ہو کر کہا کہ انہیں میرے پاس بلا لاؤ کہ میں انہیں اپنے خاص مشیروں میں کرلوں۔ چانچہ آپ تشریف لائے۔ جب وہ آپ سے ملا، آپ کی صورت دیکھی۔ آپ کی باتیں سنیں، آپ کے اخلاق دیکھے تو دل سے گرویدہ ہوگیا اور بےساختہ اس کی زبان سے نکل گیا کہ آج سے آپ ہمارے ہاں معزز اور معتبر ہیں۔ اس وقت آپ نے ایک خدمت اپنے لئے پسند فرمائی اور اس کی اہلیت ظاہر کی۔ انسان کو یہ جائز بھی ہے کہ جب وہ انجان لوگوں میں ہو تو اپنی قابلیت بوقت ضرورت بیان کر دے۔ اس خواب کی بنا پر جس کی تعبیر آپ نے دی تھی۔ آپ نے یہی آرزو کی کہ زمین کی پیداوار غلہ وغیرہ جو جمع کیا جاتا ہے اس پر مجھے مقرر کیا جائے تاکہ میں محافظت کروں نیز اپنے علم کے مطابق عمل کرسکوں تاکہ رعایا کو قحط سالی کی مصیبت کے وقت قدرے عافیت مل سکے۔ بادشاہ کے دل پر تو آپ کی امانت داری، سچائی، سلیقہ مندی اور کامل علم کا سکہ بیٹھ چکا تھا اسی وقت اس نے اس درخواست کو منظور کرلیا۔
